Celebrate International Workers Day

Celebrate International Workers’ Day @ ILGWU
Sunday May 1, 5- 9 pm.
322 Elm Ave, Long Beach CA

My fellow anarchists, socialists, communists and revolutionaries, you are invited to join Frau Fiber and Kate Dollenmayer (filmmaker and film archivist at the Wende Museum of Cold War) in celebrating laborers and worker’s movements from around the world!  Our celebration will feature; scarf making, egg decorating, hand message, communist educational films and snacks appropriate for the occasion.

Cambodian garment factory workers toil at the W&D garment factory, just southeast of Phnom Penh, April 28, 2004. Cambodia's garment industry has grown from 49 factories in 1996 to more than 200 factories today, employing 240,000 people. But as the end approaches for a special deal between the United States and Cambodia linking labor rights to trade quotas the workers are worried for their futures. (AP Photo/Isabelle Lesser)

5-6 pm, Frau Fiber will lead a worker’s scarf making workshop.

Sorbian Easter Egg Scratch Technique

6-7 pm, Kate will project a 1954 film demonstrating traditional Easter egg decoration among the Sorbs, a Slavic culture in eastern Germany and Poland. This technique is similar to Pysanky, the Ukrainian method of Easter egg decoration.  May 1st also marks Eastern Orthodox Easter (Pascha) this year, we’ll try our hand at pysanky too.

7-8 pm, Frau Fiber will lead a workshop on hand massage to heal hard working hands.

Sewing Technician

8-9 pm, will project films from the Wende Museum’s collection of communist educational and industrial media and home movies. We’ll watch short films made for television in the 1970s and 1980s to introduce young people to trades in the textile industry.
